Tips For Keeping Your Engagement Ring Safe When Travelling

Going on holiday is an exciting experience, and deciding whether or not to take your engagement ring is completely up to you. If you do decide to take your engagement ring, there are a few things to consider and to be aware of, before you go:

1. Insure Your Rings

We strongly recommend you insure your rings and fine jewellery after you make your special purchase. However, if you haven't already, then insuring your items before travelling should be your number one priority.

2. Check Your Insurance Policy

Make sure you have world wide cover when travelling. Check your insurance policy to ensure you are aware of the finer details, for example when you are and are not insured. Many jewellery policies only cover you when you're wearing your ring or when it is stored in a locked safe, so it is vital to check the fine print.

3. Use Your Hotel Rooms Safe

Whenever you are not wearing your ring, lock it in your hotel room safe. Make sure to test the safe before you lock valuables inside and don't forget to take them with you when you check out.

4. Never Wear Your Ring in the Ocean

When swimming, your hands can shrink from the temperature change, making it all too easy for your rings to slip off without you even realising. Salt water can also be corrosive to precious metals and leave a residue on your diamonds, making them appear dull.

5. Beware Of Sand

Sand is an abrasive material that can potentially scratch your rings. Sand grains can also get stuck in the claws and in the stones settings.

6. Wear Your Ring Strategically

Know when, and when not to wear your engagement ring. If you have some exciting excursions planned involving the ocean, physical activities which could lead to knocking or impacting your ring, or if you're concerned about theft, then it is best to leave your ring securely locked in your hotel room safe.

7. Clean Your Ring After Your Holiday

Residue from lotions and soaps can cause dirt to collect and cause your diamond to lose its sparkle. Clean your ring when you arrive back at home to restore its shine or bring it in to Kayes for a complimentary clean and condition check.
