The discovery of diamonds in South Africa at the end of the 19th century led to its rapid growth as the worlds premier source of diamonds. Diamonds mined earlier than this, from the early historical mines in India and later Brazil were often referred to as 'Old Mine' and were distinguished by their squarer shape, smaller higher table, steeper table facets and a much larger culet, visible as an extra facet at the base of the stone. The term is now widely used to describe any diamond cut to these proportions.
